Me Again

My daughter said to me the other day "Dad, why do you have a Blog if you never update it?" To which my answer was "life just kinda got in the way", and it's true.

I had made a conscious decision not to post any Blogs unless I had something to say but I must admit that I never expected it to be quite this long between blogs. The "rot", blog-wise set in when I began to work away from home, staying in a hotel during the week and only coming home at weekends.

Only for a couple of weeks turned out to be seven weeks. You would think that four nights a week in a hotel room would give me plenty of time to write or Blog, or both, and indeed that should have been the case. I had every intention to write my opus given all the unaccustomed peace and quiet (no offence to the wife, kids and dog intended).

I don't know whether it was the strange surroundings, the fact that I spent a good portion of every evening working late and then looking for somewhere I could eat within budget, or the long "quick chats" with the family but I just couldn't get going.

Coming back home changed things again. My creative juices started flowing and I am once again working on various projects. Most recently I have been working on an edit of a story entitled Cacotopia which I am very pleased to announce has been accepted for inclusion in an anthology to be published later this year. Watch this space for more details when I get them.

Hopefully it won't be another three months!!!!

This, That and the Other

Well, it's been a few weeks since my opening blog and the world hasn't come to an end so I guess it's safe to have another go! Always helps to have something to blog about, so, what has been happening in the world of James Lauren since the 27th January?

Well, for one thing I got another year older, even though technically it is only 20 days older but the mileometer clicked over by another digit on the 31st January. At my age I try my best to ignore birthdays but was bullied into accepting presents and going out for a meal. I was even treated to a trip to the cinema to see Django Unchained, which was awesome.

Tarantino movies are not everyone's cup of tea, but I absolutely love them. He is a director who's love of film shines through in every shot, and believe me there we a great many shots in Django. This is slated for a 3rd June release (in the UK) and I already have the blu-ray steelbook on pre-order (breaking my own unwritten rule of not paying any more than £10 for a blu - it is Tarantino after all, and there have to be exceptions to every rule!!)

Anyway, on to my literary aspirations.

With my aim to become a bestselling author in mind (although I'd settle for just being a selling author at the moment!!) I am hard at work on a couple of projects - one is called Burn Inside and this is a sequel to my bestselling* Burn in Starlight. It is all planned out and I'm now in the process of putting some flesh on the bones, so watch this space (and Amazon of course) for some exciting news coming soon.

I am also working on a currently untitled YA Vampire book, which is a much more ambitious (and longer term) project. I have the first drafts of several key scenes in the bag and I'm quite excited about how this one is going. Once it is much nearer to completion teasers and samples will be posted in this blog.

OK, my life isn't exciting enough to have much else to talk about, so I need to sign-off for now. Until next time dear reader...

* I confidently refer to Burn in Starlight as bestselling because it is simply the book of mine which is selling the best. Until I am a real best selling author I will take whatever crumbs of comfort that I can!

Hello World

Welcome to the brand spanking new blog of James Lauren, author, raconteur and all round good guy.

So exactly who is this James Lauren guy and why is he intent on inflicting this blog on you, and more importantly why does he refer to himself in the third person?

Well, to answer your (or is that his own?) questions in reverse order, the third-person-ness is because James Lauren is not real - he is the alter-ego, pen-name or a real person who's name does not sound at all authorish. The real him, er... me, er... whatever, holds down a sensible, boring, mundane job and would never think of foisting his/my attempts at penmanship on the world.

James Lauren on the other hand...

Anyway, who is James Lauren?

Well James Lauren (only names have been changed) was born in Yorkshire, England in 1966, the year England won the football (or soccer for any US readers) World Cup, and just as Leeds United began their golden period. This has of course led to unrealistic expectations and a lot of disappointment in the years since!

It was also the same year that Star Trek was born, and only three years before man first set foot on the moon, and this has lead to a lifetime of waiting for the little green men to arrive and an interest in speculative fiction, whether that be in the written or visual form.

His sense of humour (such as it is) was developed watching the Carry On films and The Benny Hill Show, honed on Benson and Blackadder and polished by Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett.

He first tried his hand at writing in the early 90's, but life got in the way, as it often does, and his literary aspirations were put on ice for the next twenty years before becoming an itch that just had to be scratched again.

He now lives in south Staffordshire with his wife, two kids and a dog, holds down the aforementioned sober and sensible job in the daytime, but at night (and possibly also at weekends if his wife lets him!) James Lauren comes out to play!
